What is a Margin Calculator?

A margin calculator is a tool that helps investors and traders calculate the minimum amount of funds required to initiate and maintain a trade. This is particularly essential for those engaged in F&O trading, where leverage is a core component. Torus Digital’s equity margin calculator, f&o margin calculator, and stock margin calculator cater to different asset classes, helping you understand your margin requirement before you initiate a position. Whether you plan to Buy or Sell, using this tool ensures that you comply with SEBI regulations and avoid margin shortfalls. With just a few clicks, it evaluates total risk exposure, applicable margins, and suggests capital requirements for open or planned trades. You can use this online margin calculator repeatedly to test various trading strategies without risking actual capital.

Types of Margin

SPAN Margin: Required to cover potential losses in worst-case market scenarios, calculated using Value at Risk (VaR) methodology.
Exposure Margin: An additional buffer required over SPAN to cover extreme market volatility.
Premium Margin: Applicable for option buyers, representing the cost of purchasing the option.
Calendar Spread Margin: Applicable for spread positions across different expiry dates, often used in F&O strategies to reduce required capital.
Initial Margin: The total of SPAN and Exposure margins required before placing the order.
Extreme Loss Margin: A standardised buffer for unexpected losses, mandated by SEBI.

These margins are structured to provide a cushion against price swings and safeguard both traders and brokers from potential financial distress. Understanding the breakdown of these margins is essential for every trader managing high-volume or leveraged portfolios. With the f&o margin calculator, you can visualise how each type of margin contributes to your overall capital requirement.
